MORMONS MISSING JESUS

Missing the Relationship with Jesus

Most Christians would miss their relationship with Jesus if they joined the Mormon Church. Jesus is the One who heals: there would be no more healing! Jesus is the One who delivers away evil spirits. There would be no more deliverance!

“Mormons say in their presentation that Jesus is our “eldest brother.”  Christians believe that Jesus is our Lord and God and that He is co-equal and co-eternal with the Father. Mormons believe, in contrast, that the Father created Jesus and so they don’t pray to Jesus.

Paul can ask Christ to comfort us, then why shouldn’t we pray to Jesus? Why would I join a Church that discourages praying to the eternal, all-powerful, and one and only Son of God?              John 1:18

Paul said, “May our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father . . . comfort your hearts and strengthen them in every good work and word,”                                                                                    2 Thessalonians 2:16-17

Differences between Christianity and Mormonism

Christians and Mormons use the same words such as grace, faith, God and sin; they mean very different things by them. For example, as it pertains to faith, Alma 32:17 says, “Yea, there are many who do say: If thou wilt show unto us a sign from heaven, then we shall know of a surety; then we shall believe. Now I ask, is this faith? “Those who think they know something do not yet know as they ought to know.” 1 Corinthians 8:2 In other words, faith involves believing something we do not know. If we knew it, there would be no need for faith.

IS MORMONISM TRUE?

Many Mormons testify that the Mormon Church is the only true church and that they have the “restored” gospel of Mormonism, they urge the members to pursue genealogical work.”

In the Mormon scene you are taught that the Book of Mormon is true and it is the only true religion on the earth. A knowledgeable Christians would counter, “Well, I don’t think it quite says that in the Bible.”

IT’S MORE THAN PRINTER ERROR

Many people are unaware that over the years the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon Church) has made 3,900 changes to its original scriptures of 1830.  Some of the early revelations given to Joseph Smith had been changed: it was quite obvious as there were photocopies there to show the changes.

Here are some examples, with explanations reaching beyond the possibility of printer error:

Original 1830 Text (Alma 15, p. 303):
“yea, I know that he alloteth unto men, yea, decreeth unto them decrees which are unalterable, according to their wills”

Later, Altered Text (Alma 29:4):
“yea, I know that he alloteth unto men, according to their wills”

IN ORDER TO ERADICATE EARLY DOCTRINES:

Original 1830 Text (2 Nephi 12, p. 117):
“…and many generations shall not pass away among them, save they shall be a white and a delightsome people.”

Later, Altered Text (2 Nephi 30:6, 1840 edition)
“…and many generations shall not pass away among them, save they shall be a white pure and a delightsome people.”

Still Later, Altered Text (2 Nephi 30:6, editions until 1981):
“…white and delightsome…”

Even Later, Altered Text (2 Nephi 30:6, editions until 1981):
“…pure and delightsome…”

THE HOLY SPIRIT

Although the Holy Spirit is acknowledged in Mormonism, He is never actually seen being active with Mormons.

MORMONS MISSING JESUS

IS THE BOOK OF MORMON TRUE?

God is the source of all truth, and because consistency is an essential characteristic of truthfulness, we all instinctively believe God will be consistent in revealing Himself to humanity. We see this is true in the Christian Bible. What God reveals about Himself in the New Testament.

MORMONS MISSING JESUS

The God of Mormonism appears to be inconsistent and confused. As a result, can anything else in these texts be trusted?  The changing nature of God as described in the Mormon scriptures is not indicative of the true God worshiped by Christians. If God is truly immutable and eternal, Mormonism is false. As Christians, our faith has to begin and end in truth. “God is spirit, and His worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”                                        John 4:24

Upon deeper investigation, the cities mentioned in the Book of Mormon have not been located (i.e. Zarahemla), the gold plates cannot be examined and Book of Mormon “historical sites” cannot be excavated in the same way biblical sites can be. When there is no convincing external evidence corroborating a belief, it must be based upon experience, feeling and blind faith.

The Mouse’s Search for the Cat

There is a mountain analogy: the roads go up, not down; that man makes the roads, not God; that religion is man’s search for God, not God’s search for man.  C. S. Lewis says this sounds like “the mouse’s search for the cat”.

Mormonism

Christianity is not a system of man’s search for God but a story of God’s search for man.  True religion is not like a cloud of incense wafting up from special spirits into the nostrils of a waiting God, but like a Father’s hand thrust downward to rescue the fallen.

Mormonism

MORMON CULTURE AND FAMILY

There is a lot of good in Mormonism. Christians do not come with a spirit of criticism or superiority. We can appreciate in Mormonism: the teaching that children obey their parents, including many aspects of morality, teaching against alcohol intoxication, opposing fornication and other forms of immorality.

Christians do not want to destroy the Mormon culture and Mormon way of life and replace it with Christian customs and Christian way of life. We realize that there may be a loss of one’s relationship with their family.

In the end, one’s conversion will benefit the whole family because of the gifts of the Holy Spirit of healing and deliverance available. A prayer of deliverance (of evil spirits) will leave a Mormon member of the family with a complete sense of peace immediately. A prayer of healing from a Christian disciple will bring about 80% healing, and the remaining healing will come about with a convert’s prayer of praise and thanksgiving. This healing comes through the Name of Jesus Christ and no other god or deity. This should be proof enough of the TRUTH OF CHRISTIANITY.

JESUS WISHES TO SPEAK TO YOU.

THE PROMISE OF THE SPIRIT

“You have received the Holy Spirit My brother Melvin and all My brothers and sisters who were baptized and confirmed. You have received all the gifts of the Holy Spirit but have you put these gifts into practice? This is important that you make use of these wonderful gifts in order to grow in holiness.

I am the one who promised the Holy Spirit to the Apostles before My Ascension. It was of great importance that the Holy Spirit come upon them to fill them with great faith, to strengthen them to do all that I had asked them to do, and to bear all the trials and sufferings they were to suffer during their years of work as Apostles.

You know that the Holy Spirit is the third person of the Blessed Trinity and we can say that He is the love between the Father and Me, His Son. He is the one who brings holiness to the people. Those who receive the Holy Spirit and work together with Him will grow in holiness every day. They will have the strength to avoid sin and the power to do good work for the growth of My Church and for the Kingdom of God.

You do not have to receive the Holy Spirit just once, no, you can receive the Holy Spirit every day. Ask Him to come to you every morning and to help you throughout the day. You will receive great graces to walk the right path to eternal life.

I bless you all.”

The above messages came to Father Melvin Doucette:

Fr. Melvin Doucette was ordained to the priesthood on and joined the Missionaries of Africa for 29 years in Africa. In contemplative prayer every morning, Fr. Doucette receives by interior locution “messages from heaven” to share with the public.

Is the BIBLE true? 2

THE FALSE PHILOSOPHY OF RELIGION

Here is a passage that comes from a BIBLE ABOUT RELIGION:

“See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and vain deceit, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ.” Colossians 2:8

Let’s analyze this more closely:

See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception [pseudo-intellectual babble], according to the tradition [and musings] of mere men, following the elementary principles of this world, rather than following [the truth—the teachings of] Christ.                                                                  Colossians 2:8

So, one should not accept philosophy of mere speculation and imagination, but of the modest, laborious investigation of facts.

Vain Deceit is, that which is vain and empty, and has no solid foundation, and even deceitful and delusional.

Christianity is not a philosophy, but a relationship with God in Christ TODAYnot knowledge of abstract principles.

How do we know this? Healing takes place TODAY in the Name of Jesus.

IS GOD THERE?

There is an intellectual atheism based on modern philosophy; a protest atheism, which insisted on the incompatibility of belief in God with human freedom and fulfillment; and a pessimistic atheism, which sees in the enormity of evil prevalent in the world an overwhelming argument against the existence of God.

As a Gallup poll of 1975 shows, in only 6 percent of all Americans questioned claimed to be atheists or agnostics; 94 percent believed in God and 69 percent in life after death — about the same percentages as in 1948.

But while many pay lip service to the existence of God, it seems true that many have experienced the death of God insofar as traditional images of God no longer make sense for them. They feel God’s absence, rather than His presence.

In the last century, God dwelt there with hosts of angels and directed earthly affairs: bringing good and bad weather, sickness and health, happiness and unhappiness.

After being gradually undermined for several years by accumulating scientific knowledge, this cozy picture has all but vanished from human consciousness.

If we can’t think of God, then, as some kind of absolute monarch ruling the universe from above, how should we think of Him?

Allow us to speak of an ultimate reality that is somehow “beyond” that which is directly given in our experience and our own ultimate limit.

All of us are constantly running up against limits, which are basically of four kinds: a) external physical limitation caused by material objects which can restrict our activities; b ) organic limitations we experience when we suffer illness, weakness and exhaustion; c ) personal limitations in our dealings with others insofar as their ideas and intentions often run counter to our own ; d ) restrictions related to our awareness of moral and aesthetic considerations such as the distinction between good and bad, beautiful and ugly.

Through this experience of our own finiteness we become aware.

How, then, can we conceptualize this ultimate limit?

The only experience we have is of our bare finiteness.

An encounter with God will involve both the ‘experience’ of our finitude and the faith which, points to some dynamic reality beyond the limit.

God as the ultimate limit, God as He is Himself, is thus profound mystery, which is completely beyond our grasp or comprehension.

Only on the ground that God had in fact revealed himself could it be claimed He exists.

The One Who is Creator of the world, Who by His providence guides and sustains and directs all things to their intended purpose. “God” means the Lord, the One Whom we must serve and obey,

He is our final End and Source of eternal happiness. He is also the Father Who loves His children, faithful, forgiving and at the same time absolutely just.

For the believer, He is the most real of all:

A believer finds in the symbol “God” the means of seeing life as a purposeful experience and a way of viewing the world as imbued with a personal presence. It enables one to feel at home in the world insofar as it is ruled with order and purpose.

As long as one stays on a purely metaphysical or speculative level it seems impossible that we will ever be able to answer this question with any certainty.

From Dynamic Catholicism: A Historical Catechism Bokenkotter, Thomas.

WHAT IS RELIGION?

Religion is man’s search: for strength and courage to be gained from the spiritual, which is greater than any individual man. It is the Power beyond our control and upon whom we feel ourselves dependent.

The mind and will of God exists outside man, which is superior to all men. Man attempts to get in touch with His spirituality. Once contact is made (by listening) man desires to live in harmony with God. This contact operates by grace and flourishes by prayer.

what religion

THE MYSTERY OF RELIGION

Religion deals not in problems but in mysteries. A mystery may be difficult or impossible to understand, but you are still passionate about and involved in.

Such passionate makes clear, objective thinking difficult, and being involved in a problem means one’s perspective is limited. One way to solve such mysteries is to rely on faith.

A DIVINE CHURCH

Suppose the Church were not divine but only human. Suppose she were our invention. Suppose the Church, unlike Christ, had only one nature, not two: that she was only human, not divine, and as “modernist” or “liberal” or “humanist” theology claims about Christ.

In that case we ourselves would have to figure out the right understanding of scripture, without divine authority. We would have to discover the truth about the Trinity, and the two natures of Christ, and baptism, and the Eucharist, and saints, and Mary, and Purgatory, and the Church herself, and crucial and controversial moral issues like abortion and marriage and homosexuality and euthanasia and contraception and war and capital punishment and money.

Under this supposition, who could ever know with certainty the will of God? And how could the Church ever be one? There are actually twenty thousand different churches or ten main-line protestant denominations, each teaching its own sincere but fallible human opinion. It is hard to believe that God would want His Church to split into so many pieces.

You Can’t Just Be Spiritual; You Need Religion.

 DIVINE CHURCH

Many people say, “I’m spiritual, but not religious.” On one hand, you can be happy that you are seeking a deeper meaning in their life. On the other hand, you should be worried that you will stay satisfied there. Spirituality is what you believe and how you find meaning in regards to a higher Power while religion is how I live out the truth and what is right in regards to a higher Power. In religion:

  1. We can gain an intimate knowledge of Christ.
  2. We are better protected from evil so as not to misinterpret Scriptures.
  3. We need a Christian community for encouragement and support.

religion spirituality

ONE CHRISTIAN GOD

We Christians (of all flavors) are under greater attack now that at many or most times in the past, from atheists, secularists, Islamists and others. It would therefore seem to be in our best interests to put aside whatever our differences are or have been in the past and try our best to become what Jesus asked for…that we may all be one.

Even if all religions are true, even profoundly true, this does not mean that all religions are totally true (free from error) or equally true. For only one religion centers on the only sane man who ever claimed to be the TRUTH.

ONE DIVINE CHURCH

No other religious teacher – except some egomaniacs, fakers, tyrants and money-mad manipulators – claimed to be God. Any other religion except Christianity could survive without its founder after making such a claim.

If Abraham or Moses or Muhammad or Buddha or Confucius or Lao Tzu turned out to be mythical figures and not real historical people at all, the religions that they founded would still survive, just as Shakespeare’s plays would still retain their power and appeal if it were discovered that Shakespeare never existed, that the name was a pseudonym for Marlowe or Bacon. But Christianity could not survive if Christ was a fictional figure. You can’t be saved by a fictional or a dead savior.”

HAVE YOU BEEN HURT BY A CHURCH?

The Church often wounds us deeply. People with religious authority often wound us by their words, attitudes, and demands. Precisely because our religion brings us in touch with the questions of life and death, our religious sensibilities can get hurt most easily. Ministers and priests seldom fully realize how a critical remark, a gesture of rejection, or an act of impatience can be remembered for life by those to whom it is directed.

There is such an enormous hunger for meaning in life, for comfort and consolation, for forgiveness and reconciliation, for restoration and healing, that anyone who has any authority in the Church should constantly be reminded that the best word to characterize religious authority is compassion. Let’s keep looking at Jesus whose authority was expressed in compassion.

When we have been wounded by the Church, our temptation is to reject it. But when we reject the Church it becomes very hard for us to keep in touch with the living Christ. When we say, “I love Jesus, but I hate the Church,” we end up losing not only the Church but Jesus too.

The challenge is to forgive the Church. This challenge is especially great because the Church seldom asks us for forgiveness, at least not officially. But the Church as an often fallible human organization needs our forgiveness, while the Church as the living Christ among us continues to offer us forgiveness.

It is important to think about the Church not as “over there” but as a community of struggling, weak people of whom we are part and in whom we meet our Lord and Redeemer.                  HENRI NOUWEN

ARE YOU AN ASPIRING THEOLOGIAN?

WHAT IS THEOLOGY?

ASPIRING THEOLOGIAN

Theology is neither a nine-to-five job nor a career. To know and speak truly of God is a vocation that requires more than academic or professional qualifications. The image you should have in mind is not the professor with a tweed jacket, but rather the disciples who dropped everything to follow Jesus. Becoming a theologian means following God’s Word where it leads with all one’s mind, heart, soul, and strength.

Theology is the study of how to speak truly of God and of all things in relation to God. But theologians can’t approach the object of their study the way biologists study living creatures or geologists the earth. God cannot be empirically examined. God is the creator of all things, not to be identified with any part of the universe or even with the universe as a whole. Speaking of God thus poses unique challenges. If God had not condescended to communicate to creatures something of his light, we would be in the dark.

BY GOD, OF GOD, TO GOD

Are you familiar with Thomas Aquinas’s definition? “Theology is taught by God, teaches of God, and leads to God.”

By God. Only God can make himself known. We’re simply children who love their father and want to know him better, who trust their father’s wisdom: And He (Jesus) said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”                                                                     Matthew 18:3

Of God. Theology is thinking hard about what God has taught about Himself and all things in relation to Himself.

To God. Theology is ultimately about cultivating godliness, in oneself and one’s community. A theologian is a certain kind of person, whose created intelligence has been illumined by the Holy Spirit. Continue reading ARE YOU AN ASPIRING THEOLOGIAN?

THE ORTHODOX CATHOLIC UNITY 2

GEOPOLITICAL COMPETITION

Essentially the Orthodox Church shares much with the other Christian Churches. The Orthodox Church differs substantially in the way of life and worship.

During the early Trinitarian and Christological controversies, after the patriarchs of Alexandria, Jerusalem, Antioch and Constantinople had succumbed to one heresy or another, only the papacy remained constant in witnessing to the orthodox Faith.

Historically, the formal parting between the Christian West and the Christian East occurred in 1054; to some extent it reflected cultural and geopolitical competition between the Greek-speaking “east Roman” empire, in other words Byzantium, and Latin-speaking western Europe where Roman authority had collapsed in the fifth century, but new centers of power had emerged.

ORTHODOX CATHOLIC UNITY

Constantinople came to regard itself as a “Second Rome” after the fall of the Roman Empire in the west, but after the city’s fall to the Ottomans in 1453, Moscow came to see itself as a “Third Rome.” The Eastern Orthodox communion bases its teachings on Scripture and “the seven ecumenical councils”.ORTHODOX CATHOLIC UNITY

SPIRIT-FILLED CHINA

God is God-with-us. Finally, when Jesus left earth 2000 years ago, He promises the Holy Spirit. In the Holy Spirit, God reveals the full depth of the covenant. The word covenant means “coming together. God wants to be as close to us as our breath. God wants to breathe in us, so that all we say, think and do is completely inspired by God. God is God-within-us. Thus God’s covenant reveals to us to how much God loves us.                                                                   HENRI NOUWEN

The Holy Spirit works through Spirit-filled ministries. This is especially true in China. The majority of the estimated 100 million Chinese believers have come to Christ through Holy Spirit anointed preaching and teaching, and the work of the Holy Spirit in healing the sick and performing all kinds of miracles.

The Charismatic Movement has infiltrated mainstream evangelicalism and exploded onto the global scene at an amazing rate. It is the fastest-growing religious movement in the world. Charismatics now number more than half a billion worldwide.

PROTESTANT AND CATHOLIC CHURCHES

Nearly half a century after Mao Tse-Tung banned religion in China, the country is home to an estimated 72 percent of the world’s religiously unaffiliated people.

Most Chinese aren’t sure what it means to be “Protestant” (the word doesn’t translate into Chinese). They do, however, all know the word “Catholic”—and some wrongly think it has nothing to do with Christianity: “Catholics believe in Mary, but we believe in Jesus.”

In China, 44 percent of religiously unaffiliated people have worshiped at a burial site in the past year. Catholics have a strong belief in offering effective prayers for relatives. Yet, many young Chinese look down on these traditions, calling them “superstitious” and “old-fashioned.”

Catholicism have higher liturgy. The Catholic mass might remind young people of the rituals they see their parents perform.  They walk into a Catholic church, and there are statues of the saints and candles lit for them—which obviously creates the same ambiance as lighting candles for the Buddha.

Some Chinese young people want a more “modern” faith. It’s Thursday evening in Fujian Province, southeast China. Scores of men and women are dancing,  blowing shofars, singing and worshiping God.CHINA AND THE HOLY SPIRIT Continue reading CHINA AND THE HOLY SPIRIT 2

CATHOLIC CELIBACY

CATHOLIC CHURCH CELIBACY

CATHOLIC CELIBACY CHURCH

Theologically, the Church desires to imitate the life of Jesus with regard to chastity and the sacrifice of married life for the “sake of the Kingdom” (Luke 18:28–30, Matthew 19:27–30; Mark 10:20–21), and to follow the example of Jesus Christ in being “married” to the Church, viewed by Catholicism and many Christian traditions as the “Bride of Christ”.

St. Paul taught that chastity is the superior state of life, and his desire expressed in I Corinthians 7:7–8, “I would that all men were even as myself [celibate]—but everyone has his proper gift from God; one after this manner, and another after that. But I say to the unmarried and the widows. It is good for them if they so continue, even as I.”

While priestly celibacy is a law rather than a doctrine, it is still a very ancient one. The practice of clerical celibacy (ordaining only unmarried men) began from the 11th century onward and became a formal part of canon law in 1917 (Sacerdotalis caelibatus).

EASTERN CATHOLIC &  ANGLICAN CHURCHES

Until recently, the Eastern Catholic bishops of North America would generally ordain only unmarried men; for fear that married priests would create scandal. Since Vatican II’s call for the restoration of Eastern Catholic traditions, a number of bishops have returned to the traditional practice of ordaining married men to the priesthood. Bishops are still celibate.

CATHOLIC CHURCH CELIBACY

In the 23 Eastern Catholic Churches (which are in full communion with Rome), married men may be ordained to any order except as bishops, and one may not marry after ordination as a sub-deacon.Their discipline is that married men may be ordained, but priests may not marry. In other words, Father McGee can’t start dating, but married Mr. McBee could ask to be ordained. Continue reading CATHOLIC CELIBACY

TO EAT JESUS’ BODY? 2

The Real Presence

The Early Christians actually took the Real Presence for granted. It doesn’t even seem as if there was much debate. No one denied the Real Presence of Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament before the year 500 A.D. The reason for this is that the Bible is very clear on the subject.

’Take, eat, this is My body.’ Then He took the cup and gave thanks. He gave it to them and said, ‘You must all drink from it. This is My blood of the New Way of Worship which is given for many.’”                                                                                                                         Matthew 26: 27, 28

Real Presence

“For My flesh is true food,” Jesus told his disciples and the others listening to Him, “and My blood is true drink.”                      John 6:55

Anyone who eats the bread or drinks from the cup, if his spirit is not right with the Lord, will be guilty of sinning against the body and the blood of the Lord.  This is why a man should look into his own heart and life before eating the bread and drinking from the cup.  Anyone who eats the bread and drinks from the cup, if his spirit is not right with the Lord, will be guilty as he eats and drinks. He does not understand the meaning of the Lord’s body.”                                                                                                                        1 Corinthians 11:27-29

The wording in the Bible is very strong and hard to refute: why would anyone be “guilty of sinning “ if it was just a casual sharing of communion.

So when a group of evangelist suggest having communion, something seems wrong. They don’t know that it is all about the Real Presence.

Catholics believe Jesus is uniquely present in the Eucharist.  But how can this be?

Catholics believe that the same divine word in Christ that had the power to heal, raise people from the dead and forgive sins, could also change bread and wine into his body and blood. They believe that they are in close contact with Him and His Presence affects us (grace).

We can even go deeper in our explanation by saying it is the new manna, the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, which is supernatural food (grace) given for supernatural life (our soul). It is, as Paul says,” participation in the blood and body of Christ.” 1 Corinthians 10:16

JESUS WISHES TO SPEAK TO YOU.

JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES TEACHINGS 2

TEACHINGS OF JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES

Jehovah’s Witnesses are taught that all other Christian churches represent renegade Christendom, and only the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society (which is the spiritual leadership of the Jehovah’s Witnesses) can be trusted.

AUTHORITY

The Bible describes how the apostles could pass on their authority to future bishops: Let another person take over his work.”Act 1:20 Why should we believe

(1) that the Catholic Church lost its God-given authority to interpret Scripture and proclaim doctrine and

(2) that the Watchtower is God’s official organization on Earth with his authority to interpret Scripture? How does one know that Jesus has given the Watchtower special authority?                                                         You Will Know Them by Their Fruits                                 Matthew 7:16

Why did Watchtower teach the following?

  1. Taught that the world would come to an end in 1914.[6]
  2. Said this was a miscalculation and the world would actually end in 1915.[7]
  3. Said the patriarchs Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob would be resurrected when the world would end in 1925.[8]
  4. Strongly hinted that the end of the world would come in 1975.[9]

Jehovah witness deceptionIn 1995 stopped printing the following message about the end of the world in its magazine Awake!: “[T]his magazine builds confidence in the Creator’s promise of a peaceful and secure world before the generation that saw the events of 1914 passes away.”Deuteronomy 18:22 states that a person is not a prophet if he makes a prediction that fails to come to pass.

If God were really guiding the Watchtower, then why would he allow his “spirit-led” organization to lead so many people into error about the end of the world? The simplest answer to these questions is that men, not God, guide the Watchtower, and so it should not be trusted with our eternal salvation.

6.  “We see no reason for changing the figures nor could we change them if we would. They are, we believe, God’s dates, not ours. But bear in mind that the end of 1914 is not the date for the beginning, but for the end of the time of trouble.” Zion’s Watch Tower (July 15 1894) p.226. Over time the Watchtower started teaching that the world began to end in 1914, not that it was going to end in 1914 (even though this contradicts the Watchtower’s assertion that 1914 was not the beginning of anything but the end).

Jehovah's Witnesses

7.  This miscalculation was due to confusion over whether there was a year “zero.” Russell wrote, “In view of this strong Bible evidence concerning the Times of the Gentiles, we consider it an established truth that the final end of the kingdoms of this world, and the full establishment of the Kingdom of God, will be accomplished near the end of A.D. 1915.” Charles Taze Russell”The Time Is At Hand” Studies In the Scriptures Series II (1915) 99, 101, 242.

8.  “Therefore we may confidently expect that 1925 will mark the return of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and the faithful prophets of old, particularly those named by the Apostle in Hebrews 11, to the condition of human perfection.” Joseph Rutherford, Millions Now Living Will Never Die (Brooklyn, NY: International Bible Students Association, 1920) 89-90.

9.  “Whatever the date for the end of this system, it is clear that the time left is reduced, with only approximately six years left until the end of 6,000 years of human history.” The Watchtower (May 1, 1970) 273.

10.  ‘When a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if the word does not come to pass or come true, that is a word which the LORD has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously, you need not be afraid of him.”                                             Deuteronomy 18:22

We need solid proof for their claim to divine authority. Jehovah’s Witnesses certainly do not appeal to any miraculous intervention from God as proof. Continue reading JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES TEACHINGS 2

CHRISTIANITY and RISE of WESTERN CULTURE 2

THE RISE OF WESTERN CULTURE

What was the real cause of the rise of Western Culture itself? How did it come about that a small group of Christians acquire the power to transform the world religion in such a short space of time? Christianity developed from 72 disciples. Was it supernatural evangelism? The Book of Acts demonstrates that physical healing, miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit were regular occurrences as the early Christians engaged in evangelism.

By the fourth century Christianity had become the official religion of the Roman Empire and inspired the new type of Byzantine culture, which had its center in the new Rome founded by the first Christian Emperor at Constantinople.

Let’s look at Christianity after the collapse of the Roman Empire. There were terrible economic, social, and political conditions that befell Europeans from 500-750 A.D. Yet, the Church tenaciously held on to what was of left of Western Civilization. Both Irish Celtic monks and the Benedictine monks preserved and spread their learning via their missionary zeal. It was the Benedictines, started by St. Benedict (480-544), who, upon meeting their Irish Celtic counterparts taught the Irish practicality and gave Irish monasticism a more sensible and less rigorous rule in a self-contained society (The Benedictine Rule). One of their own was selected Pope-Pope Gregory I 590-604) who is credited for not only learning and leadership, but the beginning of classical music with the Gregorian chant.

The greatest service of the Irish monks was the new movement of missionary expansion throughout Europe in the seventh and eighth century. This was a time during the victorious tide of Muslim invasions, which was sweeping over Western Mediterranean and North Africa. Finally, Charles Martel checked the Muslim advance at Poitiers in 732 AD. There were two figures who stand out as supreme—the priest, to teach and offer sacrifice and the king to rule and judge. This was also a time of wholesale exploitation and expropriation of bishoprics and monasteries to provide benefits to Martel’s warriors. Missionaries like St. Boniface admitted that they could not have been effective without the support of Martel.

Christianity was able to maintain its power by the awe inspired by its supernatural prestige: an arc of refuge against the violence of the barbarians in the world of war. Christianity became a strong unifying cultural force which provided the roots for present day European civilization as we know it: a direct bearing on the fate of our modern society.

There was an intimate relationship between religious faith and its social achievement. Christianity transformed Europe from a barbarian hinterland into a center of world culture and was responsible for the rise of city-states, the creation of new literature and philosophy, as well as new social, cultural and religious institutions: the order of chivalry, the religious orders and the universities.

The conversion of Clovis (480-520) of the Northern Barbarians was historically important when one considers that Clovis’ empire (basically modern France) became open to the Benedictines and the spread of knowledge and learning. The rise of the Franks under Charles Martel (717-742), Pepin (741-768), and especially Charlemagne (768-814) was important for the spread and renewal of the Church.

Charlemagne’s palace school at Aachen was a center for learned men and drew students and clergy where literacy and texts were developed that enhanced and preserved the learning of the Ancient Greeks and Romans, including a uniform system of script called Bookhand which included upper and lower case letters and punctuation. The monks had to instruct their converts not only in the Christian doctrine but in the Latin tongue. They had to teach reading and writing including calligraphy, painting, music, chronology and the knowledge of the calendar. Continue reading CHRISTIANITY and RISE of WESTERN CULTURE 2

Divorced Protestant Marrying a Catholic? 2

DIVORCED PROTESTANT TO MARRY A CATHOLIC?

Will the Catholic Church overlook my previous marriage since it wasn’t in the RC Church? Would I need an annulment? Would I need to convert or do I simply make the “child upbringing pledge?”      What about divorced Protestants who wish to marry a Catholic?

Perhaps no issue arouses more antagonism or controversy than divorce.

Marriage Divorce Catholic

You really cannot paint all Protestant churches with the same brush when it comes to marriage except that their marriages are considered valid until proven otherwise.

What about divorce? Jesus’ stark warning is that divorce is not valid in God’s sight, and that remarriage is therefore adultery. Mark 10:11-12 So I say to you that anyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of unchastity, causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.”                                                                                                                                                   Matthew 5:32

So our Lord recognizes that the sin of fornication, committed by either the husband or the wife, can so mutilate the marriage bond that the two must live separately.

Marriage is intended by God to be a “perfect union of persons and full sharing of life”. And so a perfect union is of its nature indissoluble.

Catholic Marriage

God can begin again the work of creating that miracle of oneness which he intends for us. This is what marriage is all about. It is God’s way of putting two lives together to produce a oneness that will be a testimony to the whole world of the grace and the power of God to change human lives. He can soften hearts, and remove hardness, and change people into what they ought to be. This is what marriages are for.

The two can undo their own work; but they cannot undo the work of God. God has joined together. And together they remain, until God Himself comes to put them asunder in death.

The Church always presumes that marriages are valid until proven invalid — Protestant marriages included.

Catholic Marriage Protestant

Some people enter into marriage without understanding the essentials of the commitment they are making. Without knowing what they are consenting to, a man and a woman cannot actually give full consent to a marriage union. Without this consent, a marriage does not really take place, even if the ceremony is performed and the marriage certificate is signed. This is what is known as an “invalid” marriage.
