The Eucharist in the Life of St. Faustina
There was a very special place for the Holy Eucharist in the life of Saint Maria Faustina. Holy Communion was the strength and support of St. Faustina in her every day struggle of life. The Lord told her: “In the Host is the power; it will defend you always“. Diary 616
It was only Saint Faustina to whom Jesus gave explicit instructions to write His words regarding the new devotion that He wished to establish in the world. This diary is an actual record of Jesus’ words to St. Faustina.
A regular experience for St. Faustina was the vision of the Lord during Holy Mass. Over sixty such visions are recorded in her diary, mostly of the infant Jesus, a few occasions with the Blessed Mother, and at other times, Jesus during His passion and some of His majesty.
Some dozen times she records seeing the rays of mercy as in the image of the Merciful Savior coming from the Holy Eucharist, at times covering the world Diary of St. Faustina 420, 441, 1046
Again and again, Jesus told St. Faustina that He had chosen her period in history to pour out His mercy upon mankind, in preparation for His Second Coming. Thus, she saw that her state of “living host” was a pure, unmerited gift of Divine Mercy.
She had a special relationship to the Holy Eucharist, because Jesus gave her a clear understanding of this mystery. She describes it “as the wonderful gift of His presence on earth”. During Mass, “I thanked the Lord Jesus for having redeemed us and for having given us the greatest of all gifts, the Holy Eucharist”. “You wanted to stay with us, and so you left us yourself in the Sacrament of the Altar, and you opened wide your mercy to us. You opened an inexhaustible spring of mercy for us, giving us your dearest possession, the Blood and Water, that gushed forth from Your Heart” Diary 1747
“On leaving the earth, O Lord, You wanted to stay with us, and so You left us Yourself in the Sacrament of the Altar, and You opened wide Your mercy to us.” Diary 1747
Jesus said, “I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is My flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.” John 6: 51
Just as the living Father sent Me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on Me will live because of Me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” John 6: 57,58
Effect on an Indifferent Person
“Behold, the treasures of grace that flow down upon souls, but not all souls know how to take advantage of my generosity.” Diary 1687
“It pains Me very much when religious souls receive the Sacrament of Love merely out of habit, as if they did not distinguish this food. I find neither faith nor love in their hearts. I go to such souls with great reluctance. It would be better if they did not receive Me” Diary 1288
So none of it happens if our attitude isn’t right. “In a false person,” writes St. Thomas Aquinas, “the sacrament does not produce any effect.” One is false if in one’s heart, one does not desire this union and does not even try to remove every obstacle to it. Christ therefore does not remain in him or her, neither does he or she in Christ.
What I need to do is to acknowledge my unworthiness to receive such a gift, and prepare my heart to enter communion with Him, trusting in His merciful love for me, saying, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and I shall be healed.” Matthew 8:8
“Oh, how painful it is to Me that souls so seldom unite themselves to Me in Holy Communion. I wait for souls, and they are indifferent toward Me. I love them tenderly and sincerely, and they distrust Me. I want to lavish My graces on them, and they do not want to accept them. They treat Me as a dead object, whereas My Heart is full of love and mercy. ” Diary 1447
Jesus’ words to Saint Faustina: “I desire to unite Myself with human souls… When I come to a human heart in Holy Communion, My hand are full of all kinds of graces which I want to give to the soul. But souls do not even pay any attention to Me; they leave Me to Myself and busy themselves with other things. Oh; how sad I am that souls do not recognize Love!” Diary 1385
The Eucharist is Alive
There is a problem: souls do not even pay any attention to Me:
Not everyone can experience Jesus in the Eucharist because Jesus wants only those who love Him to find Him.
“When I come to a human heart in Holy Communion, My hands are full of all kinds of graces which I want to give to the soul. But souls do not even pay any attention to Me; they leave Me to Myself and busy themselves with other things. Oh, how sad I am that souls do not recognize Love! They treat Me as a dead object“. Diary 1385
Jesus is very clear: “Anyone who loves Me will obey My teaching. My Father will love them, and We will come to them and make Our home with them.” John 14:23
The words used,” the Body of Christ” by the celebrant may leave an impression that the Eucharist is not alive, yet it’s not a wafer; it’s not bread. It’s a real Person and He’s alive. Should this not demand more respect and reverence for the Eucharist at the time of receiving it?
Receiving Him with this awareness, makes us more alive and we will agree with St. Paul: “I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.” Galatians 2:20
“See, I have left My heavenly throne to become united with you. What you see is just a tiny part and already your soul swoons with love. How amazed will your heart be when you see Me in all My glory. But I want to tell you that eternal life must begin already here on earth through Holy Communion. Each Holy Communion makes you more capable of communing with God throughout eternity.” Diary 1810
Where the Father and the Son are present, the Holy Spirit is also there. So when we receive Holy Communion, the Father and the Holy Spirit become present with Christ — not sacramentally, but in a complete way. Jesus, when You come to me in Holy Communion, You who together with the Father and the Holy Spirit have deigned to dwell in the little heaven of my heart… Diary 486
Once after Holy Communion, St. Faustina heard these words: You are Our dwelling place. At that moment, I felt in my soul the presence of the Holy Trinity, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Diary 451
Her union with the Lord was, in His words, as a bride: “Here, I am entirely yours, soul, body and divinity as Your Bridegroom. You know what love demands, one thing only, reciprocity.” (Diary 1770). What she experienced during Holy Communion was a complete union with the Holy Trinity: “At that moment, I was drawn into the bosom of the Most Holy Trinity, and I was immersed in the love of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. “ Diary 1670, 1121,1129
“The most solemn moment of my life is the moment when I receive Holy Communion and for every Holy Communion I give thanks to the Most Holy Trinity”. Diary 1804
Every morning during meditation, I prepare myself for the whole day’s struggle. Holy Communion assures me that I will win the victory; and so it is. I fear the day when I do not receive Holy Communion. This Bread of the Strong gives me all the strength I need to carry on my mission and the courage to do whatever the Lord asks of me. Diary 91
After receiving Communion, many of the saints would spend and extended time of thanksgiving during which they would receive great insights and often go into ecstasy.
St. Padre Pio, who claimed to have received stigmata while making his thanksgiving after Communion, wrote: “When Mass was over I remained with Jesus in thanksgiving. Oh how sweet was the colloquy with paradise that morning! It was such that, although I want to tell you all about it, I cannot. … The heart of Jesus and my own — allow me to use the expression — were fused. No longer were two hearts beating but only one. My own heart had disappeared, as a drop of water is lost in the ocean. Jesus was its paradise, its king. My joy was so intense and deep that I could bear it no more and tears of happiness poured down my cheeks.”
Thomas was so moved with reverence, he said, “My Lord and my God!” John 20:28 What a miracle we experience today in the Holy Eucharist!
The Spiritual Communion
The Eucharist is the ongoing fulfillment of Christ’s Gospel promise to remain with us: “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:20
St. Catherine of Sienna records a vision in which Christ Himself taught her the value of a spiritual Communion. She saw Christ holding two chalices: One chalice was made of gold the other was made of silver. Our Lord explained to St. Catherine that He kept her sacramental communions in the gold chalice and her spiritual communions in the silver chalice. He then told her that both types of communions were pleasing to Him.
So here is the secret: “The manner of receiving this sacrament is twofold, spiritual and sacramental. The effect of a sacrament can be secured if it is received by desire.” St. Thomas Aquinas There is no limit to the number of times you can receive Communion spiritually; He is not talking about “instead of”, but “in addition to”. It is all about union with God.
“Jesus, when You come to me in Holy Communion, You who together with the Father and the Holy Spirit have deigned to dwell in the little heaven of my heart, I try to keep You company throughout the day, I do not leave You alone for even a moment.” Diary 486
The theme of the presence of Jesus living in the soul appears many times on the pages of the Diary. “I am aware that You are dwelling in me, together with the Father and the Holy Spirit, or rather I am aware that it is I who am living in You, O incomprehensible God. …O my God, I have come to know You within my heart, and I have loved You above all things that exist on earth or in heaven” (Diary 478). She compared her soul to a tabernacle, wherein the living Host is reserved Diary 1302
Eventually, she began to experience the real presence of Jesus constantly, from one Holy Communion to the next. “I have come to know,” she wrote, toward the end of her life, “that Holy Communion remains in me until the next Holy Communion” (Diary 1302). “The soul receiving this unprecedented grace of union with God cannot say that it sees God face to face, because even here there is a very thin veil of faith, but so very thin that the soul can say that it sees God and talks with Him.” Diary 770, 771
“O Jesus concealed in the Host, my sweet Master and faithful Friend, how happy my soul is to have such a Friend who always keeps me company. ” (Diary 877) “Oh, how happy I am to be a dwelling place for You, O Lord! My heart is a temple in which You dwell continually.” Diary 1392
Frequency is more important than duration. St. Leonard of Port Maurice explains: “If you practice the holy exercise of spiritual Communion several times every day, within a month you will see your heart completely changed.”
This union with His children is God’s great desire, but He won’t force it on us. He waits for us to ask. So, say your own version of a prayer, like
“Lord, Jesus, I believe in You; I trust You; I love You;
In the Name of Jesus, come into my heart. Thank you for the Blood and Water that gushes forth from Your Heart.
Throughout her diary, St. Faustina recorded the strength she received from the Eucharist Throughout the day she adored Jesus, praising and asking Him for graces. Diary 1821
To love God, not because of powerful institutions, or even because God commands it but to do so in an act of unencumbered freedom, is the very source of mystical relation.
You may already have experienced an inward state of peace and joy and assurance indescribably intense, accompanied with a sense of being.
HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED HOW TO BECOME A CHRISTIAN?
- Christians don’t shout, “I am clean living!” They whisper “I was lost, but now I’m found and forgiven.”
- Christians don’t speak of this with pride. They confess that they stumble and need Christ to be their guide.
- Christians don’t say,” I’m strong.” They say they are trying to be strong because they are really weak and need strength.
- Christians don’t brag of success, but they admit that they are failing and they need God to clean up the mess.
- Christians don’t claim to be perfect. Their flaws are far too visible but God believes they are worth it.
- Christians still feel the sting of pain and they have their share of headaches but they call upon His Name.
- Christians are not holier than thou. They are also simple sinners who receive God’s Unbelievable Grace.
Christianity on a Table Napkin:
If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9
God the Father will wipe every tear from our eyes, and there shall be no more death or mourning, crying out or pain. We will be like Him, for we will see Him as He is The Holy Spirit will have made all things new. Eternal joy will have begun. “For the Mighty One has done great things for me— holy is His name.” Luke 1: 49
Are we not like Barabbas justly condemned for murder, but saved by the innocent Jesus on the cross? Are we not like the adulterous woman, deserving of death by stoning, to whom Jesus says, “I do not condemn you”? And Jesus saved them both. In fact, Jesus came to earth specifically to look for and save those who were lost.
“Come now, let us settle the matter,” says the LORD.
“Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow;
though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool. Isaiah 1:18
