Materialistic life can be so absorbing that we get caught in it and we forget about spirituality. Many don’t believe in the soul and therefore many don’t give it any place in the hierarchy of values. What we need is soul in the middle holding together mind and body. A spiritual life of some kind is absolutely necessary for psychological ”health”.
Psychology is a secular science while care of the soul is a sacred art. We separate psychology and religion, therapy and spiritual practice. Psychology and spirituality need to be seen as one. Psychology is incomplete if it doesn’t include spirituality in a fully integrated way. When the soul is neglected, our problem doesn’t just go away; it appears symptomatically in obsessions, addictions, violence and loss of meaning.
The emotional complaints of our time that are heard by therapist:
- Vague Depression
- Disillusion about marriage, family and relationship
- Loss of values
- Yearning for personal fulfillment
- A hunger for spirituality
All these symptoms reflect a loss of soul and let us know what the soul craves. We cannot solve our “emotional” problems until we grasp the mystery that honors the Divine.
We yearn excessively for entertainment, power, intimacy, sexual fulfillment, and material things. We think we can find these things if we discover the right relationship or job or therapy. We strive to attain alluring satisfaction in great masses, thinking that quantity will make up for lack of quality.
Yet, without soul, whatever we find will be unsatisfying. What we truly long for is the soul in each of these areas. Soul doesn’t pour into our lives automatically. It requires our skill and attention.
We cannot care for the soul unless we are familiar with its ways. We need to make the necessary changes revealed by depression and anxiety. These problems make it felt because the soul needs attention.
ILLNESS AND HEALING
Doctors are learning that there is an actual correlation between psychological experience and physical ailments. For example, one’s colon is unhappy. Doctors know that there is a relationship between repressed anger and colitis. If cancer cell growth has gone berserk, is there something that has been disordered?
The word, “disease or dis-ease” says it all. It means without ease and disease emanates from stress. Disturbances created from marriage and family can be more stressful to the soul than conditions of work.
Modern medicine is hell-bent on cure and has no interest in anything about the soul. Maybe our lives are too secular and in need of such a visitation through the soul. Do we know what can be speaking silently to us in our body? “Recognize what is before your eyes, and what is hidden will be revealed to you.” Gospel of Thomas
There has been a general loss of formal religious practice in many people’s lives. Growing older is one of the ways the soul nudges itself into attention to the spiritual aspects of life.
Spirituality doesn’t arrive fully formed without effort. Most religions around the world demonstrate that spiritual life requires constant attention. For good reason, people go to church, temple or mosque regularly.
There are two ways of thinking about church and religion.
- We go to church to be in the presence of the Holy and to learn and have our lives influenced by His Presence.
- Church teaches us directly to see the sacred dimension of everyday life.
Some think that religion is a Sunday affair and they risk dividing this life with that of the secular world. They can be extremely religious in a formal way, yet profess values in everyday life that are thoroughly secular. For others it is a week-long observance that sustains them in their spirituality.
This access to the soul and the recovery of a sense of sacredness will make us more human.
IN SEARCH OF SPIRITUALITY
We are in this world but not of this world since every day Christians say: “Our Father who art in heaven…
Even when we worship different gods, attend different schools, have different skin colors, we’re all supposed to share spirituality.
But you have a compute and Wikipedia: “Spirituality can refer to an ultimate or immaterial reality; an inner path enabling a person to discover the essence of their being; or the ‘deepest values and meanings by which people live.’”
Yes, that’s Wikipedia! It continues on to say, “Spirituality is often experienced as a source of inspiration or orientation in life. It can encompass belief in immaterial realities or experiences of the immanent or transcendent nature of the world.”
Hmm! That’s extremely broad. Maybe you should read a book on the subject.
Princeton religion scholar Leigh Schmidt wrote one called Restless Souls that charts the development of American spirituality. Rather than the “New Age” phenomenon it is sometimes misinterpreted as, spirituality is an egalitarian, pluralistic realm of experience and thought has a unique and sometimes intellectually advanced role in American history. So, basically, Schmidt can’t (or won’t) really define spirituality, either.
We instinctively know that it’s mixed up in religion, but it’s definitely distinct from institutional religion. Can someone be religious without being spiritual? It’s completely plausible.
On the other side of the coin, you hear “I don’t go to church, but I’m very spiritual.” You may get called spiritual once in a while without understanding what it means. People can use spirituality as a buffer. Relying on ambiguity can be risky.
Spirituality is centered on the deepest values and meanings by which people live. Spirituality defines our inner nature or inner soul: that means you need to dive deep into your inner self. Whoops! Does that sound like New Age? Let’s talk about inner peace.
It is no easy task to walk this world and find peace. Inside of us, it would seem something is at odds with the very rhythm of things and we are forever restless, dissatisfied, frustrated and aching. We seem to be overcharged with desire that is hard to come to simple rest. Desire always seems to be stronger than satisfaction.
We are not easeful or restful human beings who occasionally get restless. The reverse is true. We are driven people, forever obsessed sometimes to the point of dis-ease. (Stress causes a lot of disease).
Suppose your Creator designed you INITIALLY in a special way as He did when he gave you two eyes, a brain, etc, Augustine says: “you have made us for Yourself, Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.”
So spirituality is ultimately what we do with that desire: a deep energy, as something beautiful, as an incredible pull, more important than anything else inside us, toward love, beauty, creativity, and a future beyond our limited present.
God’s love exists deep within each of us, in our restlessness, just as we can reside deeply within God. God won’t let go of us. Love is a powerful force in life. Spirituality is what we do with that love. It is not difficult to understand that spirituality and ethics and morality are not far apart. Morality is the public face of our spirituality.
It takes religious conversion for our moral life to become immersed in the ways of love, which means being totally in love with God. There is a holy longing to be loved and to love. What previously may have felt as a moral obligation, now becomes a new transfusion of love, which can transform us into a cheerful and generous giver. No wonder the apostle, Paul wrote, “And the greatest of these (gifts) is love.” 1 Corinthians 13:13
What is religious conversion? CONVERSION requires internalization of the new belief system that differs from previous beliefs. Religion is defined as “the feelings and experiences of individuals in relation to that which they consider divine.” The key word here is DIVINE . In a nutshell, it is an introduction to the intimacy of a triune God: a RELATIONSHIP with Jesus Christ, a tapping into all the gifts of the Holy Spirit and holy longing to become one with our Creator.
Now how is it that I sense a little skepticism in you? You may experience a turn off at the words, “Jesus Christ”. That may have something to do with the baggage or all the monkeys on your back that you have been carrying. You see, there is another force out there that may have wriggled themselves through a gap into your psyche.
It is the same force that soldiers experience after the trauma of a war experience that fuel hatred and unforgiveness, This roots itself and causes post traumatic syndrome disorders (PTSD). So I say a little prayer for you as you read this: “In the Name of Jesus Christ, I command all evil spirits influencing you to be quiet and not give you any evil thoughts.”
The Bible is very clear that God in His sovereign mercy frees man from bondage and sin and is able to raise them to a high spiritual life. “and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, having been held captive by him to do his will.” 2 Timothy 2:26
Most of us don’t feel impelled to change. Most conversions are gradual – the culmination of years of faith. Your religion becomes a matter between you and God.
We are not talking about going to church one hour on Sunday and thinking that you have put God in your corner. Going to church puts quite a few of us to sleep. We become very pleased with ourselves. We forget about how others are living.
Instead, you learn to go to church for the right reasons: there or anywhere you can say anything you want when you pray and you know God is listening and no one else.
People are Hungry for the Spiritual.
“I love you.
I gave a command to all My friends to go into the whole world and preach the Good News to all, baptizing all those who believe in Me.
I want you, My friend, to teach all I have taught you. So few today take up this command of mine.
My people are hungry for the spiritual. Many wish to come to know Me intimately through contemplative prayer, a prayer so much favored by Me.
May all of you be generous with your time by spending time with Me in prayer. I will bless you who give yourselves to this prayer, and I can assure you, that you will make great progress in the spiritual life.
I am your friend who will never let you down. I am always very close to you, and I want a close and loving relationship with each one of you. Open your heart to Me every day and let us walk together. I bless you all.”
The above messages came to Father Melvin Doucette:
Fr. Melvin Doucette was ordained to the priesthood on and joined the Missionaries of Africa for 29 years in Africa. In contemplative prayer every morning, Fr. Doucette receives by interior locution “messages from heaven” to share with the public.
God divinely inspired the BIBLE . How do we know? Each of eight accurate predictions show a high probability mathematically. The probability of one individual fulfilling eight prophecies have odds of 1 in 10 17 (1 in 100,000,000,000,000,000). Jesus Christ fulfilled all prophecies, therefore the Bible MUST BE TRUE.
The Old Testament indicates another 40 astonishing predictions.
Christianity experiences stunning growth—from approximately 3.8 million adherents in China in 1956 to an estimated 87 to 100 million Christians today.
In the end, one Christian conversion will benefit the whole family. The gifts of the Holy Spirit of healing and deliverance will help the whole family. A prayer of deliverance of evil spirits will leave any member of the family with a complete sense of peace immediately. A prayer of healing from a Christian disciple produces 80% healing. The remaining healing comes from continued prayer of praise and thanksgiving until all the healing is complete. This healing comes from the Holy Spirit through the power in the Name of Jesus Christ. No other god or deity or doctor uses this power. This proves the TRUTH OF CHRISTIANITY.
BILLIONS OF CHRISTIANS CAN’ T ALL BE WRONG!
Christianity is not a philosophy, but it is a relationship with God, your Creator, in Christ TODAY. It is not knowledge of abstract principles. How do we know this? Healing takes place TODAY in the Name of Jesus Christ.
Many Christian disciples use the gift of healing. They also use deliverance to deliver away evil spirits influencing people. These evil spirits cause depression, addictions and illness through all forms of stress. Only the Name of Jesus Christ makes healing and deliverance possible.
HOW IS JESUS STILL ALIVE TODAY?
Jesus is alive today! He heals today (through His followers) and in many cases it is realized immediately. How else can you explain the explosion of Christianity, the world’s largest religion, on earth: 2.2 billion adherents, nearly a third (31 percent) of all 6.9 billion people on Earth.
Christians know and feel His Presence; they communicate with Him personally; Christian prayers are always answered.
This author has been given the Gift of Healing only because he is a Christian Lay Missionary, who travels two to three places every year. On his last trip to Columbia he successfully transferred his Gift to his Spanish translators, who were able to heal as he did. He has healed Muslims to their great surprise.
He also delivers away evil spirits along with their healing. All those who are delivered from evil spirits feel a complete physical sense of peace.
DREAMS AND VISIONS
God can give a message to those non-Christians to change their heart. God knows faith will be developed eventually. God will come to you in the form of dreams or visions. So be sensitive to any dreams or visions, when you ask God for it earnestly.
HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED HOW TO BECOME A CHRISTIAN?
- Christians don’t shout, “I live a clean life!” Christians whisper “I feel lost, but now God found me and God forgives me.”
- Christians don’t speak with pride. They confess that they stumble and need Christ to be their guide.
- Christians don’t say,” I’m strong.” They say they try to be strong because they need strength.
- Christians don’t brag about success, but they admit that they fail and they need God to clean the mess.
- Christians don’t claim to be perfect, but God still believes in them.
- Christians still feel the sting of pain. They have their share of headaches but they still call upon His Name.
- Christians are not holier than others. They are simple sinners who receive God’s unbelievable Grace.
Christianity on a Table Napkin:
“If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9
God the Father will wipe every tear from our eyes, and there shall be no more death or mourning, crying out or pain. We will be like Him, for we will see Him as He is The Holy Spirit will have made all things new. Eternal joy will begin. “For the Mighty One has done great things for me— holy is His name.” Luke 1: 49
Are we not like Barabbas who was justly condemned for murder, but saved by the innocent Jesus on the cross? Are we not like the adulterous woman, deserving of death by stoning, to whom Jesus says, “I do not condemn you”? And Jesus saved them both. In fact, Jesus came to earth specifically to look for and save those who were lost, like you.
“Come now, let us settle the matter,” says the LORD, “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool”. Isaiah 1:18
You may need some counseling with a pastor, priest or competent Christian worker, who will introduce you to a Short Course on Who is Jesus? Start by reading a short biography of Jesus in the Gospel of Luke. Read several verses before going to bed and read the same verse upon arising. He will defend you from attacks of the enemy when you ask Him.
